Yuzawa Onsen is a hot spring and ski resort developed during the Japanese bubble. Iwappara itself is very much beginner level, suitable for families, but there are over a dozen ski mountains in the valley providing different levels of challenge.

Summer activities include golf, tennis, hiking and waterslides, making it an ideal escape from the Tokyo heat.
The location is prime, easily reached from Tokyo by bullet train (about 80 minutes) allowing one to leave Tokyo early morning and be on the slopes when the lifts start operating.
As foreigners have become interested in ski properties in Japan, they have begun to look beyond Niseko for opportunities and "the experience." Costs in Yuzawa are about a tenth of Niseko.
